Al Pacino And Anthony Hopkins’ ‘Misconduct’ Bombs At The Box Office

‘Misconduct’ opened in the UK last weekend and brought in just under $150.  Yes, you read that correctly. It made that little amount in one city when the studio spent $11 Million to make it.   That number is staggering for a film starring both Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins.

Let’s take a moment to break this down.  The film is a legal thriller that also stars hottie Josh Duhamel and Malin Akerman (Couples Retreat).

Misconduct is about a young lawyer (Duhamel) who takes on a big corporate leader (Hopkins) with the support of his boss (Pacino), but it ends in a big bag of corruption.  We watched this film over the weekend and we have some thoughts on its lack of success.  First, the story is hard to follow and the camera work doesn’t help.  There a multiple shots where it pans from face to face but the characters are in different places and it’s not made clear.  We had to watch twice because the first time we fell asleep trying to stay in tune with all that was happening.  Another giant flaw was the music.  It was like a cheesy Lifetime thriller.

The acting, however, was not that bad.  Hopkins didn’t have enough scenes to give us an opinion of whether he was phoning it in, but Pacino did his best with what he was given.  The script was unoriginal, but not terrible, and he worked the the best way he knew how.  Akerman and Duhamel were their normal selves, mediocre at best.  Why did no one flock to the theater for Pacino and Hopkins?

We think it’s from a lack of advertising.  Did anyone even know this movie was on the horizon?  We did, but only because we check Pacino’s IMDB page daily.  The release was in the US for a week, then South Korea (where it made $900,000 surprisingly), and now the UK with more European releases to come. And yet, we watched it on Amazon where it is available to rent over the weekend.  Why weren’t these actors doing the talk show circuit to draw attention to the film?  Is the movie great?  No, definitely not. But the whole thing is just odd.
