Missy Elliott is back in a big way! The legendary hip hop icon returned from a ten-year hiatus, and she's been covering a lot of ground since popping back up.
Elliott made her first onstage appearance at this year's Super Bowl halftime performance, but she made the return official with the release of her new single "WTF (Where They From)"
With the new single has come a slew of promotional opportunities, and Missy Elliott is making each worth reading. Along the way, she is being sure to give thanks where it is due and throw just enough shade to keep 'em coming back for more.
Elliott started things off by paying tribute to some of her fellow artists who have been remarkably encouraging as she gets back to business, in an interview with i-D magazine. The first of those is none other than Katy Perry.
"First of all, I can't thank her enough. A thousand thank you's wouldn't be enough," she said in regards to Perry inviting Elliott onstage to perform some of her caree- defining hits during the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
"She allowed me to perform my records, on her set," she reflected about the gracious popstar.
Another artist to receive some thanks from Missy Elliott is her "WTF (Where They From)" collaborator and producer Pharrell. She revealed that he encouraged her to get back in the studio in the months following her Super Bowl performance. "He said, 'I'm not trying to push you, but people miss you,'" before offering up the "WTF" production to her. Pharrell pushed for Elliott to remain true to herself, something that has resulted in a warm reception upon the single's release.
No true promotional campaign would be complete without a serving of shade though, and Missy Elliott threw a bit during her next interview with Billboard magazine. When the journalist on the job mentioned parallels between the "Lose Control" songstress and fellow hip-hop heavyweight Nicki Minaj, Elliott played it off coolly.
Nicki Minaj may be inspired by the industry professional, but she ain't Missy Elliott. "Unfortunately, breaking news, there is only one Missy," she stated, effectively ending any comparisons.
Whelp, it looks like the Missy Elliott campaign is up and running!
In the same interview, Elliott shared plans for a hopeful 2016 album release. We'd say that she's ready!
