This week's episode of Modern Family begins with Mitch being given the opportunity to work a case -- "The Closet Case" and a job that he really needs -- but it is for Jay's rival closet company Closets Closets Closets Closets, and Jay has still not forgiven his former best friend for his betrayal. Mitch takes the job in spite of Jay, who does not even let Mitch discuss the matter with him. Earl Chambers (Jon Polito) is not as nice as he initially seems and is not willing to bury the hatchet as a truck parks in front of Jay's drive that is not all that kind, as you can see below.
Jay and Mitch go back to Earl's office to exact some revenge, but Earl catches them and ends up physically fighting with Jay. Mitch manages, amidst the chaos, to steal the coveted Rolodex for Jay, making up for his initial trust of Earl.
Over with the Dunphys, Haley wants Dylan to move into her parents basement with her until his t-shirt business takes off, which, naturally, Claire is inherently opposed to. Phil believes in Haley and Dylan, though, and somehow manages to persuade Claire that they should be trusted. He massively regrets this decision when he goes into her room and Haley and Dylan are in bed together. He almost coerces Claire to kick him out, but, instead, she announces pizza for dinner, fed up with Phil thinking he is the cool Dad whilst Claire is the strict rule maker. It doesn't take long for Phil to crack, and he separates them, asking Dylan to sleep in Alex's room, but Claire is not satisfied and tells Dylan to move out the next day.
Alex is having trouble with Sanjay, and Luke feigns interest over FaceTime so he can watch one of Alex's hall mates get changed. He believes she is interested in him, so he and Manny decide to visit Alex in college. They both arrive and instantly ditch Alex in favour of her friends down the hall, but Luke goes back to Alex's room in a desperate search for gum when they offer to kiss the pair of them. When he gets there, though, he finds Alex lying on her bed having got through to Sanjay, who broke up with her and is now seeing someone else. Luke decides to stay with Alex rather than return with Manny to the girls. Alex comes home for some home comfort, but even this is disrupted when she discovers Dylan in her bed.
The episode was a little predictable, with Jay and Earl's family feud in particular, but I enjoyed it, and it was good to see Phil actually stand up and make a strong decision rather than leave it all to Claire. What did you think of the episode? Let me know in the comments below.
