This week's Modern Family, entitled "The Verdict", is fraught with disaster whilst the parents (and step-mother, in Gloria's case) try to hand out teachable moments to their children.

Mitch and Cam are disagreeing, as Mitch has invited their friend Raymond to their party -- except Raymond is still getting over a breakup, and a weepy man is not exactly the ideal party guest. Gloria steps in to help, as she has been discharged from jury duty for being too excited for the job and wants to put her attitude to good use. She coerces Mitch to admit he was scared that, should he and Cam ever split up, he would be the 'Raymond'. Not convinced, Gloria probes some more, and he admits the actual truth: he was worried Cam would be the 'Raymond'. Gloria manages to settle the dispute and also advises them to invite Raymond since he could use a little joy in his life.

Since Gloria was on jury duty, Jay was left on Joe duty, which meant he has to take him to the preschool of which he disapproves. However, once he is there, he finds he relates to the story being read to the children, Larry the Lonely Leopard. Despite being mocked by one child, who Jay so kindly nicknames 'big-ears', Joe tells Jay he was a classroom hit! It was his favorite day at school ever because Jay was there.

Claire attempts to show Haley and Alex what it is like to be a strong woman in the workplace during Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, but ends up walking in to a glass door, confusing the three Herms at work, and falling flat on her face whilst on stage -- not quite the strong image she would have hoped.

Phil is doing a similar activity with Luke and Manny, except he is taking the boys on a community service 'field trip' picking up trash. However, when Phil gives an unfamiliar man money for a cab fare, Luke convinces him it is a scam, and the three deface the man's car. Like Claire's plan, this is not quite the idea Phil intended to portray (he was not meant to promote vandalism!), especially when the man eventually introduces himself as the doctor who delivered Luke.
