Sorry, Bieber, but you no longer are the most popular person on social media. With a record-breaking 46.55 million followers on Twitter, and 59.27 million likes on Facebook, Katy Perry is now the most popular social media personality. Over the weekend, Katy – whose recent album, Prism, debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts – surpassed Justin Bieber’s record of followers on Twitter and likes on Facebook. (Justin has 46.52 million followers on Twitter and 57.28 million likes on Facebook.) In addition to beating Justin Bieber, Katy has also surpassed Lady Gaga’s “Queen of Twitter” status. (Gaga has 40.41 million followers on Twitter.) Gaga has more likes on Facebook than Katy and Justin, with 60.36 million likes on the social media website. It was just nine months ago that Justin became supreme ruler of social media. He beat Gaga’s queen status, after she was on top of social media for two years. Katy has accepted her role as a popular figure on the popular website, recently telling USA Today, "I feel like I've learned how to tame that social media dragon.” She may be able to keep the dragon tame, but, just like the rest of us, she’s not perfect when posting on Twitter. She also told USA Today, “I've learned how to ride social media. I have horrible typos. I use ‘there’ or ‘your’ wrong grammatically.” Katy likes to keep her fans informed, and when she learned that Prism debuted atop the Billboard charts, she tweeted, "GOOD morning! (from TOKYO). I woke up to the news that we are #1 with the #PRISM debut & become the biggest record by a pop female this year! "For that I say THANK YOU. I hope you are enjoying all the colors #PRISM has to offer. I promise to continue to give back … Tour next year …" The Twitter competition remains close, and the numbers are always changing. Following close behind these three pop singers are Barack Obama, who has 39 million followers on Twitter, and Taylor Swift, who has 36 million followers.
