There has been speculation for months, wondering what exactly to expect from the upcoming MTV Scream series in regards to the iconic mask that the Scream franchise notoriously created. After confirmation that the new mask would differ from the original Ghostface design (owned by Fun World) many began to express confusion and concern over the evolution of a new mask. Fortunately Entertainment Weekly has revealed the design of the new killer’s look.
The mask itself seems to hold a resemblance to the Jason Voorhees hockey mask from Friday the 13th, with a Scream flair, and an almost porcelain appearance. The mask removes the larger expressed features like the eyes and wide mouth, but does so in a lesser, more subtle approach. Wes Craven, director of the films and executive producer of the series explains, “The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.” It has become apparent that the MTV Scream Series is hoping to pay homage to the films, while separating itself enough to differentiate the “Scream” universe.
Scream will tell a new story of high school students dealing with new drama and murders similarly to the original plot, but promises to expand in ways the films never could. I’m extremely eager to see what Scream has in-store for us this summer! Scream is set to air on MTV Tuesday, June 30th. What are your thoughts on the new Ghostface mask?
