Last month it was reported that the upcoming MTV Scream series would not include the ghostface mask used in all four films. Many began to question what would be used in place of the well known image, and MTV Senior VP Mina Lefevre told EW to expect a "darker version" of the Edvard Munch painting that also inspired the film's mask.
“It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version,” Lefevre explained
. She also added, “Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer.”
Scream will focus on a group of high school students (each seemingly fulfill a particular high school clique) dealing with the fallout of a deadly prank that leads to a string of murders. It will star Willa Fitzgerald, Bobby Campo, and Bex Taylor-Klaus. With the show still in early stages and a release date of October 2015, there should be plenty of time to create a mask that pays homage to the original, while adding a uniqueness to the television series itself.
