Awkward, MTV’s eccentric and beloved dramedy, will be getting a face lift for its fourth season.
Lauren Iungerich, Awkward’s showrunner, has announced that she will be stepping down and relinquishing her duties. MTV released in a statement that Iungerich’s departure was “mutual.”
“Awkward is a wonderful series, and we appreciate the creativity and devotion Lauren brought to this show. We wish her the best in her new ventures,” stated MTV’s President of Programming, Susanne Daniels.
According to Deadline, Iungerich’s choice to depart from MTV and Awkward is due to both professional and personal reasons.
Three months ago, she decided to abandon her controversial pilot Hot Mess which ultimately led to the network choosing not to go forward with the show. Both Hot Mess and Awkward were developed under the previous MTV regime, before Daniels’ time.
At this time, MTV is recruiting new showrunners for a fourth season of Awkward whose fate is now uncertain.
