American electronic pop band Muna, a trio consisting of members Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson on guitars and Katie Gavin on synth bass and vocals, have teamed up with indie rock musician Phoebe Bridgers for their latest single “Silk Chiffon”. The song featuring Bridgers, who recently signed the band to her label Saddest Factory Records, is sure to make an impact with live audiences from the Midwest to the Northeast as the band joins their label owner on tour throughout September. The band will then join Kacey Musgraves on tour next year.

Described by members of Muna as “a song for kids to have their first gay kiss to”, “Silk Chiffon” dives into queer romance vibes with the opening lyrics “Sun down and I’m feeling lifted. Downtown, cherry lipstick” and thrills throughout with an addictive chorus ringing “Silk chiffon. That’s how it feels, oh, when she’s on me.”

The band, who built their following with captivating and hard hitting songs that take on issues of sexuality and gender from a queer centered perspective, seems to be enjoying this opportunity to bring a comparatively lighthearted approach to their latest single. They acknowledged the contrast in a recent Rolling Stone interview saying, “We often write such dark music, so it felt really exciting to explore a light and colorful world.”

The accompanying music video directed by Canadian writer/director Ally Pankiw, whose credits include Hulu’s “Shrill” and the beloved CBC hit “Schitt’s Creek”, drew inspiration from the satirical romantic comedy But I’m A Cheerleader about a lesbian cheerleader whose parents send her to conversion therapy. The night before the release, the band suggested social media followers watch the 1999 cult classic for context but you’re sure to enjoy the song and video either way.
