Munich Shooter Leaves Nine Dead And Sixteen Injured

Tragedy strikes Germany, as a shooting at a local McDonald’s in Munich around dinner time, left nine dead and injured sixteen others.

While we may be enjoying ourselves at Comic-Con and other festivities this time of year, it is important for us all to keep up with other events around the world. Germany suffered a great tragedy, with the shooting in Munich leaving 9 people dead and 16 injured, according to CNN.

The Friday attack left police thinking there may have been three shooters involved, although they later discovered the entire affair was conducted by a lone shooter, a German-Iranian 18 year old. He was found dead near Olympia shopping center with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound by police, according to police Chief Hubertus Andrae. Based on witness testimonies and video footage, they have no further reason to believe there were more shooters.

Although the attacker had reportedly lived in Munich for the past two years, authorities say they were not aware he would orchestrate an attack.

Children have been counted among the dead.

The shooting occurred inside of a McDonald’s inside of the Olympia mall. According to reports, the shooter opened fire around 5:50pm (11:50am EST), leaving very little time for anyone to get away or run for cover.

One witness who wished to only be known by her first name, Lauretta, said her son was in the bathroom when the shooter arrived.

“That’s when he loaded his weapon,” she said. “I hear like an alarm and boom, boom, boom … and he’s still killing the children. The children were sitting to eat. They can’t run.”

She claimed the shooter said, “Allahu Akbar,” which translates to “God is great” in Arabic.

Another witness, Huseyin Bayri, said he heard the gunman say he would kill “foreigners.”

The shooter then reportedly moved into the major part of the mall, where other witnesses from businesses say they heard more gunshots.

This attack has prompted Germany to increase its security throughout the nation. Police have been “deployed to the Austria-German border,” and special Bavarian forces have been brought into Munich.

Chancellor Angela Merkei called for a security council meeting today (Saturday, 7/23).

Leaders around the world have voiced their support for Germany, and condemn all acts of terrorism and violence. President Barack Obama and the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, condemned the Munich shooter and his actions.

“We are in close contact with German officials and stand ready to provide any and all assistance requested by our close friend and ally Germany during this time of crisis.”

This is not the first tragedy for Germany. Earlier this week a teenage boy stabbed passengers on a train before being shot by police. Before he died, the teenager claimed to be “inspired by ISIS.” A week before that, 84 people died in Nice, France after a man drove his truck into the middle of a Bastille Day celebration.
