Nathan Sykes Wants Peace Not War: Speaks Out Against Cyber Bullies

We live in an age where it’s very easy to make your voice heard over social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and maybe MySpace still? All of this access has made cyber-bullying something that is very real and can cause serious damage if not handled correctly.

The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes recently spoke out against cyber bullies after receiving death threats following the public feud between his band and the boys of One Direction. While a little “friendly” competition or disagreements between artists isn’t at all uncommon, it’s when bitter fans join the battle and begin taking measures into their own hands that things start to get dicey.

The boys of The Wanted challenged One Direction to a televised boxing match to settle all their feuds once and for all, but that wasn’t enough for some angry fans.

"I’m in a position where I’ve seen hate from people who maybe don’t like the band. When the One Direction argument, or whatever it was, was going on between a few of the boys, for no reason I was suddenly getting death threats and stuff off young girls and I was quite confused by that.”

“I didn’t know what I’d done but then realized they associated me with the band. But the way they say things - the fact people can hide behind a computer screen, they’d never say it to your face. They have that power, almost, of hiding behind a computer so they can be more expressive and a lot nastier.”

Nathan also tells victims of cyber-bullying not to put up with it and offers advice on how to deal with it, “You can block these people, you can remove them from your timeline, you can unfollow them. You don’t have to be ‘friends’ with these people and you can ignore them. That is the best way of dealing with it. And also speak to your friends and keep on interacting with your friends as much as possible and that will make you feel a lot better.”

Nathan is a busy guy having recently performed with Ariana Grande at Justin Bieber’s final concert in the U.S. in Atlanta, and also promoting his bands upcoming album, Word of Mouth.
