Fox’s New Girl has made some new waves in the industry recently. Two writers who worked on the pilot for a show called Square Ones have sued Fox for stealing the concept for their show.
New Girl, starring Zoe Deschanel, follows the post-breakup life of Jess, who moves into an apartment with three other men.
The original concept for Square Ones was based off of the real-life break up of writer Stephanie Counts, and co-written by Shari Gould. The writers claim that Fox, WME, and New Girl creator Elizabeth Merlwether stole their screenplay and passed it off as their own.
Thus New Girl was born.
An excerpt of the lawsuit files states that the differences between the concepts are inconseqiencial, and the entire endeavor an attempt to hide blatant fraud.
“Any differences between the Square One scripts and New Girl are so small and insignificant that they cannot be afforded copyright protection, and are, in fact, nothing more than transparent attempts to hide Defendants’ blatant plagiarism.
“These differences are more akin to eraser marks or ink blots on Stephanie and Shari’s creation and cannot be treated as original expression.”
Between the money, series credit, public apology, and an injunction against further episode distribution, Counts and Gould will clean house should the lawsuit lean in their favor.
