New Info Draws Witchy Factions On American Horror Story: Coven

Entertainment Weekly has revealed exclusive pictures from Ryan Murphy’s latest series American Horror Story: Coven.

The pictures, which were released today, Friday the 13th, show the show’s stars, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, in costume for the eagerly awaited series.

Coven is the third in the American Horror Story series, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk for FX. Its predecessorsm Murder House and Asylumm have won countless Primetime Emmys. These categories include wins for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Jessica Lange.

Lange returns to the series as Fiona, a “supreme”  for her magical powers, she is considered royalty because she descends from Salem spell casters. She has spent recent years using her powers to stay “fabulous.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, ”The murder of a young Salem witch near New Orleans inspires Fiona to return home from LA, where she’s been living the high life, and reunite with her estranged daughter, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), the headmistress of Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. The student body-and witchy bloodline-is dwindling due to coven members fearful of reproducing and passing on their powers, as well as forces determined to destroy the lineage.”

Executive Producer Tim Minear said: ”Let’s say that Miss Robichaux’s Academy is set upon by multiple outside adversaries. There’s sort of two formidable clans of witches in New Orleans. The voodoo witches were the first, and the Salem witches fled to the South from the persecution of the North, and these two factions are ancient enemies.”

Similarly to its other seasons, Coven will switch between eras. In the 1830s, we meet Madame Deplhine LaLaurie, who was a historical figure known for torturing her slaves.

Kathy Bates will play LaLaurie and Bassett will play her enemy, a voodoo queen named Marie Laveau.

Minear added: “The history of LaLaurie and the history of the voodoo witches and the Salem witches are entangled throughout the ages.”

American Horror Story: Coven premieres Wednesday, Oct 9th at 10:00 pm on FX.
