Ooh Girl, you've got backlash! Its a struggle that has hit every nationality, group, and minority and of course that is name calling. Not your play ground bullying but misusing words and thinking that it's aright to slip by using derogatory terms. The transgender words if full of slang, trans, she male, tranny, and every one has gone under scrutiny at some point. Cake Boss hit controversy after transgender icon Carmen Carrera, of RuPaul's Drag Race season 3, was used to prank Cousin Anthony into a date. She thought she was getting into a moment where transgendered individuals would be viewed in a positive light but after editing she was cut away during the scene to owner Buddy Valastro stating "That's a man, baby". A glorious moment of stepping into the light ended with running five steps back into the darkness. The world of movies and television is riddled with transphobia and rampant with jokes aimed at the transgender community, website badtransjokes.tumblr.com/ has a collection of many of them. Who would have every thought it would come from the gay community directly. RuPaul's Drag Race, now on its sixth season, has become a hotbed of controversy after this weeks past episode and mini challenge. Known for its coined catch phrases like "you've got shemail" and even RuPaul's hit song "Tranny Chaser" the show has brushed off the defamatory slurs used on the show like water off a ducks back. This week's challenge, "Female or Shemale", was close up photos of notable people and determining of they were "a biological woman or a psychological woman" using people like Christina Aguilera, Tan Mom, Detox, Tyra Banks, and Raven. The real issues here isn't the words but the context they are being used in. Casting votes as a game if someone is a man or woman is both derogatory and transphobic and the trans community immediately went to social media to fight its use. "Shemale" is a term often used in porn. The fact that ‪@RuPaul is using it as a joke muddies up our identities as trans women even more. - @sugarinakiss in Twitter RuPaul's Drag Race is one of the few outlets the gay and trans community has in the public eye, with its following growing everyday, this is some people's first real view into both the gay community and the world of drag and transgendered individuals. Using words like shemale, originally a term used to coin a new section of porn, puts a face on them and makes it seems that it is a words that's used to be funny. The show is putting the terms out there for anyone to use thinking it won't damage anyone. RuPaul has defended his use of the word tranny before and has stated, after Lance Bass's apology for using the word, "It's ridiculous! It's ridiculous! … I love the word tranny … And I hate the fact that he's apologized. I wish he would have said, 'F-you, you tranny jerk'". A string of strong words and phrases have stemmed from the show so far and it seems the it won't be lessening anytime soon, the only thing that's growing is the backlash against the actions that haven taken place thus far. What do you think?
