President Barrack Obama has vowed
to punish ISIS after intelligence analysts have confirmed that a second american journalist, Steven Sotloff, has been beheaded by Isis militants.
“Our objective is clear, and that is: degrade and destroy ISIL so that it’s no longer a threat, not just to Iraq but also to the region and to the United States,” Mr Obama said in a news conference on Tallin, Estonia on Wednesday (Sept. 3) wherein he used an alternative acronym to refer to ISIS. ISIS stands for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria which refers to a large swathe of territory occupied by the Muslim extremists.
“It’s not only that we’re going to be bringing to justice those who perpetrated this terrible crime against these two fine young men,” he also said, referring to Sotloff and James Foley, who was seen being beheaded in an earlier video. “The United States will continue to lead a regional and international effort against the kind of barbaric and ultimately empty vision the group represents."
The President was briefed on the video on Tuesday before he left for his state visit to Estonia. In the video, Mr. Sotloff is seen kneeling besides a masked figure in black wielding a knife, this is similar to the video of James Foley. He addresses the camera and said that he was paying the price for Obama's airstrikes against the group.
Over the past weeks, the United States has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS militants.
“We will not be intimidated,” the President affirmed when he made his first comments on the video. “Their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to take the fight against these terrorists.”
