Pistorius opened his testimony with a tearful apology to his former girlfriends’ family. “I will start my evidence by tendering an apology,” he said. “I would like to apologize to Mr and Mrs Steenkamp, her family and friends.” “I can’t imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness I have caused you and your family. "You're the first people I think of when I wake up. You're the first people I pray for. I was trying to protect Reeva. When she went to bed that night, she felt loved. “ He then went on to recount the difficulties of dealing with the aftermath of the shooting and even recounted the trials of his childhood. Among the highlights included his revelation that he has been using anti-depressants since the incident, and that he is scared to sleep at night. Formerly a gun enthusiast he also said that he doesn’t want to use a gun again. He also told the court of one moment where he woke up in a panic and had to hide in a cupboard he then telephoned his sister to come and comfort him. This is the first time we are hearing Pistorius’ version of events from his own mouth since the shooting took place, he is likely to be in the witness stand for a week or more as he is cross examined on the events.
