On Her A-Game: Asia Monet Ray Chats With Us About New Show
Media Courtesy of Lifetime TV
PopWrappers, if you aren't aware of the little dynamo known as Asia Monet Ray, consider this your official notification. NO MORE EXCUSES. I recently had the chance to chat with the very articulate 8-year-old triple-threat herself to discuss her dance prowess, new show Raising Asia!, and recently released EP. First let's get to know Asia and from where she has come to be at this place in her life in such a short time! Little Miss Asia Monet Ray was born in Yorba Linda, California, and her parents quickly realized she had a knack for tumbling. Soon she was enrolled in gymnastics, figure skating, and dance classes. Ultimately, the other extracurriculars fell to the wayside to make room for dancing full time. Asia soon began to sweep the competitions she was in, and, at the tender age of five, she made history by becoming the youngest StarPower National Championship winner to ever take the title. She made her television debut at six years old when she entered the first season of Lifetime’s Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Despite being the youngest in the competition, she wowed the judges and audiences week after week with her hard-hitting, sassy moves. Asia beat competitors twice her age to make it to the finale, where she placed third overall. After the competition, Asia joined Abby Lee Miller’s elite junior competition team on season 3 of Dance Moms. As one of the most popular girls on Dance Moms, Asia was offered her own reality series, Raising Asia!, which premiered on Lifetime July 29th. The series follows the young performer alongside her strict-but-fair mom, former bodybuilder dad, and hilarious little sister Bella Blu. Her debut album titled Asia Monet, features four original songs inspired by her family, friends, and fans. The full EP is available for purchase or download on Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify, as well as on Asia’s website.

How did it feel to win every solo competition you entered in season 3 of Dance Moms?

It was an honor to even be selected by Abby to enter in so many solos during my season. It really kept me motivated to be on my A-game... my Asia-game! (This girl's got jokes!)

How does it feel to be recognized and how do fans react when they see you?

It's so cool when they come up to me wanting to take pictures. They tell me about how much they look up to me and how inspirational I've been to them. I love hearing that.

When you aren't filming, recording, or performing in general, what do you like to do in your spare time?

On the weekends I like to hang out with my family or go to the mall with my friends and SHOP SHOP SHOP! I like to read; right now I'm reading an encyclopedia of dogs. (I think I almost forced her mom's hand to buy her a dog for her birthday this Sunday. Oops, sorry Kristie!) I also love playing the guitar and drawing, which is easy because I have big eyes so I can see so much more detail! (#adorable.)

Even though we all know you're super talented, do you have any HIDDEN talents you'd like to tell us about?

Yes! I can walk on my hands for a long time! I'm also a dog whisperer! (Must be from reading that dog encyclopedia!) My sister, Bella Blu, and I are really good at making stuff with Rainbow Loom! (I had to pretend like I knew what "Rainbow-Looming" was the first couple times, but finally asked her to explain what she was even saying! Asia scoffed at me, but quickly offered to make me something out of rubberbands. #duh #score)

If a genie gave you three wishes, what would you wish for?

First, I would wish for a cure for cancer. Second, that everyone could have their dreams come true like mine have. Last, I'd like a two dogs...or a thousand since I'm wishing! (I asked if there was any leeway with the number of dogs, but she was firm on either "2 or 1000". I wondered if she'd have time for so many dogs, to which she quickly quipped that she had time for her birds. I mentioned that dogs are a bit more responsibility because you don't have to walk your birds. The thought of walking her birds intrigued her so much that I think she wanted to change one of her wishes!)

What's your favorite part about filming your show Raising Asia! ?

I love that I'm in LA and not cold Pittsburgh! I love that I'm on my own and not in a big cast of girls so I can be myself and shine! My sister, Bella, is so funny during interviews; she says funny things like, "I want ice cream! I want candy! Daddy can't 'dancey' but he can 'kicky'!" (See below for one of my favorite scenes demonstrating Asia's boisterous personality!) http://youtu.be/3z2LvB5Sf2w

From where/whom did you get the inspiration for your album Asia Monet?

My music is Pop-R&B so I love listening to Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Aaliyah. I started working on my music about 2 years ago with my vocal coach Billy Hufsy. You might know him from Fame! My favorite song on the album is "Go Back"! (Asia sings an unsolicited snippet for me and I am blown away by the natural ability there! *puts album on repeat*) [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/44902259" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="450" iframe="true" /]

Final question: Who's tougher, Abby or Mom? (I didn't even have to remind her that since her mom was sitting right there she should say something nice.)

*Nervous giggle* Abby definitely is! My mom is strict but fair. Abby can see if your feet aren't pointed under the table! She can HEAR if your feet aren't pointed!  (My personal fave.) After bonding over both being "big personalities in small packages" I really developed an interest in Asia's career. I hope you enjoyed my kiki with this little firecracker, and I leave you with this little performance of hers with Little Psy on the show Miracle Korea. Be sure to follow and 'like' her on all social media platforms so you won't miss a beat in her launch to the spotlight! http://youtu.be/xjnlNWqI9mY Keep Up With PopWrapped On The Web!
