Ratings released today by the BBC have revealed that over 10 million people watched the 50th Anniversary Special of Doctor Who. The show peaked at 10.61 million viewers, with an average of 10.2 million. Whilst this means that 1 in 6 people in Britain were tuning in to this special celebration of everyone’s favourite ‘mad-man in a blue box’, it was beaten by the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing (Britain’s version of Dancing with the Stars) as the most watched show of the evening. And whilst ‘The Day of the Doctor’ may not have taken the highest ratings on Saturday night, it did manage to make it into the Guinness World Records, becoming the “world’s largest ever simulcast of a TV drama”. A fitting tribute to the world’s longest running sci-fi series, the anniversary episode was broadcast simultaneously in 94 countries, giving fans far beyond Britain the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of their favourite timelord.
