Oscar Buzz: Matthew McConaughey To Be Honored For Dallas Buyers Club Role

NULL

Caitlin Swift

Staff Writer

It was announced today that Matthew McConaughey will be honored with the Hollywood Actor Award for his role in the Dallas Buyers Club. Based on a true story, Dallas Buyers Club centers around Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) who began smuggling and selling non-FDA approved anti-viral drugs in the US to HIV/AIDS suffers. McConaughey was so dedicated to this role that he lost 50 pounds to fully get into character.

Carlos de Abreu, Hollywood Film Awards executive director, had nothing but praise for McConaughey stating, “Already acclaimed for his risk-taking work, Matthew McConaughey now achieves a career-defining performance portraying Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. It is a privilege to honor him for this role and celebrate his achievement.”

This is a big step for McConaughey. Sure he’s been in some dramas, but he is still mostly known for his roles in romantic comedies. Last year’s winner Bradley Cooper went on to receive an Oscar nomination for his work, while Russell Crowe and Forest Whitaker went on to win the Oscar. This may bode well for McConaughey come Oscar season.

McConaughey will be honored at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards on October 21st. Fellow honorees include Julia Roberts for supporting actress in August: Osage County, co-star Jared Leto for supporting actor, and Sandra Bullock for lead actress in Gravity.
