One of the saddest events of 2013 is finally getting some closure. The Oscar Pistorius trial began on March 1st. The paralympian shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February 2013, otherwise known as Valentines Day.

Pistorius’ neighbour, Michelle Burger, testified at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today. She said she heard Steenkamp screaming, saying “Her shouts, her screams were petrifying.”

Pistorius’ defence attorney, Barry Roux, cross-examined Burger and asked her some scathing questions about what she heard that night. She claims she initially thought the screams were from Pistorius himself as well as Steenkamp. She is also sure she heard gunshots, the same that killed Steenkamp.

The trial is being broadcasted live on South African television. However, Burger asked to not be filmed to keep her identity private.

Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa will be hearing the case, which is expected to take around three weeks to come to a verdict. She will then decide Pistorius’ fate, which may include over 40 years in prison (for premeditated murder and other weapons-related crimes), or even a charge of manslaughter, which could see Pistorius heading to prison for 15 years.
