Once Upon A Time returns to US TV tonight for its much awaited third season. Colin O’Donoghue, who plays Hook on the show, spoke to Digital Spy reporters about what lies ahead for his character this season.
Asked if he liked playing a villain on the show and if he was surprised at how well the character was received he said:
“Yeah. It was interesting for me, because I’ve never had the opportunity to play a character like that before. I was always kind of serious. It’s nice to be able to play a complete bad boy who’s the polar opposite to who I am…
It took me by surprise – I was a little bit taken aback that people liked him as much as they do. It’s probably a testament to the writers that they write these fantastic lines for him and incredible innuendo and stuff, especially on a show like this where you get to say stuff like, ‘If I jab you with my sword, you’ll feel it’. They’re great lines to be able to say.”
A spinoff to the show; Once Upon A Time In Wonderland was picked up earlier this year by ABC and is due to air its season premiere on October 10th. Will we see Hook in the new show?
“I don’t know. I don’t know what will be in the case of that or if once we’ll cross over or anything like that…I’m excited to see it, because I think it’s quite different from Once Upon A Time from what I’ve heard…But I think we’re all shooting in Vancouver so maybe at some point there might be a crossover, who knows?”
Speaking of what he would like to see on the horizon for Captain Hook:
“I don’t know. That’s a tough one. Because what’s great about Captain Hook is that in Once Upon A Time he’s able to drift in and out between the good guys, bad guys… I guess maybe I’d like to see what he’d be like if he decided to get rid of vengeance and try and find love again, but who knows what will happen?”
On the possible future of Emma and Hook being an item:
“I’m sure there are some groups of fans who would like to see that, and who knows if that will happen? I don’t know yet… It would be interesting to see, if he found love, how that would alter that kind of thing. But I don’t know who that would be – maybe not necessarily Emma. Who knows who it could be? I don’t.”
Have Rumpelstiltskin and Hook finally buried the hatchet?
“I don’t know. In the season finale, they are both on the Jolly Roger together and Rumpelstiltskin says to Hook, ‘So, are you finished with your quest for revenge?’ and Hook says, ‘I think so’.
It’s one of those things that I am really interested to see in the next season – how that relationship is going to work out when they’re in such close quarters. Whatever type of power struggle there would be as he’s captain of the ship and Rumpelstiltskin is the Dark One and all that stuff”
Hook have an action figure yet and would you want one?
“No, I don’t think so. There are no action figures? [PR: Not yet.] Not yet! Ooh!
Yeah, are you kidding me? An action figure? Although what if it doesn’t look like me? What if they made it look like the old Hook? I’d be really upset then. Yeah, that would be amazing if there were action figures. I think you might be right – it’s the type of show that would sort of lend itself to that.
It would be great if they made one of those ones that fires stuff – you can get different attachments. You can change the attachments and stuff. Now I’m excited – I want to have an action figure!”
Once Upon A Time premieres tonight on ABC at 8/7c. Also, keep a look out for the possibility of action figures coming your way!
