As Disney and Marvel continue to merge into one giant, amorphous entertainment mecca of awesome, they have announced a second Once Upon a Time graphic novel based on the ABC series. Once Upon a Time: Out of the Past will explore the histories of several of the show's key characters. Origin stories in the new comic will include the beginnings of Rumplestiltskin’s and Belle’s romance as well as Queen Regina's struggles with her darkness in the Enchanted Forest, in addition to why Jefferson (a.k.a. the Mad Hatter) stashed away his hat and how the dashing pirate Hook became…well, the dashing pirate Hook. Fans of the show will recognize that many of these characters' origins have already been thoroughly explored, leaving little open to surprise. Another hashing-out of the origin stories fans already know could prove to be a bit redundant. The only real mysteries lie with the Mad Hatter and some elements of Hook’s past. Regardless, it could be interesting to see where they take the characters and if they use the books to tie into any upcoming plots on the show. Once Upon a Time: Out of the Past is written by Once Upon a Time: Shadow of the Queen graphic novel writer Corinna Bechko and Once Upon a Time TV writer Kalinda Vazquez. Featured artists include Janet Lee (Dapper Men), Pascal Campion (Mr. Peabody and Sherman), Vanesa Del Rey (Sinatoro), Betsy Peterschmidt (Boys with Wings) and cover artist Stacey Lee (Silk). The book will hit shelves April 1. Are you a Once Upon a Time fan? Did you read the first graphic novel, Once Upon a Time: Shadow of the Queen? What are your thoughts? Leave your comments below!
