Over 100 world famous musicians including One Direction, Madonna, Adele and Sir Paul McCartney amongst others have joined with Amnesty International to call for the members of feminist rock band Pussy Riot to be released from Russian prison.

In an open letter by the group, the celebrities denounce the “shockingly unjust trial and imprisonment” of the two women, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova.

They voiced their support for their release ahead of a parole hearing this coming Wednesday July 24.

The band were first arrested for performing a protest song at a Russian cathedral back in 2012. They were later found guilty of hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred.

Pussy Riot’s third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was released on appeal last October.
