Yesterday (September 12), we reported a story about Professor Elizabeth Keefe’s search for a couple that featured in a wedding photo, which one of her friends had found in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
Well, today, happily, I can report to you that the owner of the photo has been identified. The man who recognized the bride and groom, Fred Mahe, came across the scanned photo online, thanks to the mass outcry by the wonderful people of the internet. It has since been confirmed by Mahe that all of the people in the photo are alive.
Attention wonderful world: ALL SIX PEOPLE ARE ALIVE AND WELL AND I HAVE JUST SPOKEN TO ONE OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!! #Happyending #911photo

Fred Mahe also commented that the photo once sat on his desk in the second tower, on the 77th floor. While it was not his wedding, he revealed that the photo was taken at a friend’s wedding in Aspen, Colorado in 2001. He went unharmed during the 9/11 attacks as he had not yet arrived at work, and is thankful he never got the chance to reach his office.

On the 13th anniversary of the attacks, Fred Mahe commented that he had now “seen the best of humanity”. This is just one story of how much power the internet has in bringing people together, and I’m sure it won’t be the last one we see.
Would you trust the internet to bring a 13-year-old photo back to you? Let us know!
