Oxygen has announced that The Glee Project will not be returning for a third season.
In a statement Oxygen said: “The Glee Project will not be returning to Oxygen but we are extremely proud of this series, which launched the careers of several talented individuals. The show had so much heart, and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling,”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesman for the cable network which is owned by NBCUniversal, made it clear that this decision is not a reaction to the sudden death of Glee star Cory Monteith. The reason for the cancellation is thought to be the late renewal of the hit Fox show. It was too late to start the casting process for a new round of hopefuls.
The station had originally wanted a new cycle of the show – where the winner won a guest star role on Glee – to air in the main show’s hiatus as the other season’s had done. This was made impossible by the April renewal of Glee. It would have meant that The Glee Project would not have aired for at least another 18 months.
The series, which featured many key players from the backstage crew of Glee including choreographer Zach Woodlee, casting director Robert Ulrich and vocal coach Nikki Anders was a ratings success with the first season hauling in 1.2 million viewers.
In the two seasons The Glee Project has helped launch the careers of Alex Newell and Blake Jenner, both of whom are returning to Season 5 as series regulars. Samuel Larsen and Damien McGinty were both recurring cast members in Season 3 of the show with Larsen returning in Season 4.
