Manny Pacquiao won his rematch fight with Timothy Bradley this Saturday (April 12) and reclaimed the WBO Welterweight belt that he lost to Bradley on 2012. But in a strange twist, the victory was upstaged by Dionisia Pacquiao, Manny’s mom, in a few moments as the camera panned on her during her son’s fight.
Clutching a rosary and prayer book, Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao was seen concentrating and pointing her fingers at Bradley while muttering a soft prayer. To many people, she appeared to be doing her best to cast a hex on her son’s opponent. This. of course, caused a twitter explosion, with many people and celebrities making a note of her ‘magical’ powers and praising her for being a supportive mother. But in the end after her ‘spell’ took effect and her son won in a unanimous decision, she did give Bradley a hug and a motherly kiss.
Jokes aside, Dionisia Pacquiao is actually a very strong-willed woman. She was abandoned three times by men she loved. One was Manny’s father, who she caught living with another woman. Despite all that she taught her children, including Manny, to still respect their father. Amidst poverty she was able to raise six children on her own.
Now that’s what we call strength. And whether she did cast a hex or not, there is no denying that her son inherited her fighting spirit. That, in the end, is the root cause of all his victories–including this one!
