Film fans have been waiting anxiously for the announcement of where Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming masterpiece Inherent Vice will be premiering. Skipping Sundance and Cannes, PTA has instead opted for the more edgy New York Film Festival, where the film will premiere as the centrepiece of the festival in late September and early October.
Based on the 2009 novel by Thomas Pynchon (one of the greatest writers to ever live), Inherent Vice tells the story of Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), a slacker detective who has to navigate the drug-fueled, groovy 1970s Los Angeles as he tries to solve the mystery of the disappearance of a former lover and her tycoon boyfriend.
Sportello navigates through the eccentric characters who inhabit this world, and through some mysterious figures, strange corporations and a vaguely supernatural entity known as The Golden Fang, Sportello’s journey is a crime odyssey we have not seen the likes of yet. The film is set to co-star Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Martin Short and a myriad of other great performers who play a variety of odd and wonderful characters.
This is the very first time the legendary Pynchon has allowed his work to be adapted to film, most likely because no one had the guts to tackle the epic nature of his storytelling. That is, no one except Paul Thomas Anderson, who is no stranger to ambitious projects, having directed such epics as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and The Master.
If you are not lucky enough to be able to go to the NYFF, Inherent Vice will have a limited release on the 12th of December and a wide release on January 9th next year.
