Penguin Couple Celebrates Their 22nd Valentine’s Day Together

Love was in the air during this couple’s Valentine’s Day celebrations. The only difference between any of us and them, is that they were a penguin couple!

Love was in the air during this couple’s Valentine’s Day celebrations…

Two African black-footed penguins spent their 22nd Valentine’s Day together last weekend. Buzzfeed claims that the penguin couple “had a better Valentine’s Day than you” and I don’t think they’re wrong. I don’t think that they’re wrong at all!

Kohl and Zelda, the two penguins in love, live together. They are from Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, down in New Orleans, Louisiana.

For the special day they were given a table and a full on meal together. That table, decorated with checked red-and-white tablecloth, flowers, candles, wrapped napkins, glasses and a giant “I love you” balloon, was where they went out for dinner together.

They received and split a meal: fish. Both of them also got chocolates and the opportunity to sit across from each other and share the moment. And yes, the love birds (thanks Metro for the amazing pun), had a personal waiter. He also poured the penguins champagne.

Senior Aviculturist Tom Dyer explained that most penguins do indeed mate for life. However, some penguins have tragic love stories that end in separation.

“We’ve seen our share of penguin heartbreak, infidelity and sometimes joyful reunion here in our colony,” Dyer told the media. “Kohl and Zelda, however, are spending their 22nd Valentine’s Day together. They are Audubon’s sweethearts.”

They have lasted longer than many couples throughout the United States, and they prove that true love still exits, no matter what form it is in. Whether you are a human, a penguin or even bacterium, love can exist between two life forms. And yes, it can last a lifetime.

So, if you’re ever feeling sad, or lonely, know that there is someone out there who loves you and cares about you. And also, just look at two penguins in love on Valentine’s Day. It shows that true love is not just a fairy tale. It is the real thing. Even the warmest of hearts can survive in the Arctic winters that penguins experience.
