The Tallahassee, Florida police department has launched an internal investigation after one of its officers was caught on video using his taser on a 61-year-old woman, shooting her in the back.

Reports state that the incident occurred after police were called to the scene on Sept. 30 to investigate complaints of drug sales in the area. After three suspects were arrested, 61-year-old Viola Young “approached the police car inquiring about one of the individuals arrested.”

In a probable cause affidavit, Officer Terry Mahan states that when he arrived on the scene “there was a crowd of people that had gathered around them and were yelling at the officers.” As he was placing one arrested suspect in the back of a patrol car, Young approached him, requiring him “to take [his] focus off of one of the arrestees and engage her. Young’s actions obstructed officers while in the course of completing their legal duties.”

Mahan’s statement goes on to say he asked Young to leave twice. When she refused, Mahan attempted to arrest her.

“I informed Viola Young that she was under arrest and reached out and took her left arm. Young yanked away, turned and began to move away from me in an attempt to defeat her lawful arrest,” Mahan wrote. “I deployed my Taser, and fired one cartridge striking Young in the back. Young was incapacitated and fell to the ground.”

Young was taken to a hospital and medically cleared before being transported to jail on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.

Officer Mahan has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the department carries out its investigation.

Tallahassee police chief Michael DeLeo told press, “We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. We want to be transparent with the community by sharing what we can at this point, including the video.”
