Last night was the star-studded American Music Awards show, and with big names like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and the ever controversial Miley Cyrus, it was bound to be an entertaining show. Let’s take a look at my favorite performances of the night and see if you agree!
5. Imagine Dragons
As much as I love Ariana Grande, I was genuinely surprised she beat out these guys (not to mention Macklemore & Ryan Lewis!) for New Artist of The Year. However, when Imagine Dragons took the stage for “Demons” and “Radioactive” I literally had chills. The drum-heavy performance was simply stunning and I was mesmerized…and slightly turned on. All that radioactivity had Taylor Swift swooning, too, as she jumped up and down for the group saying “That was so good!” Yes; yes it was, Taylor.
4. Lady Gaga
Gaga definitely redeemed herself from the awkward SNL
performance and killed it on the AMA stage last night. “President” R. Kelly and Mother Monster dazzled the crowd with their theatrical performance of “Do What You Want.” It was refreshing to see Gaga having fun and being a little more down-to-earth in her performance. I love hearing her just sing…no gimmicks, just her amazing voice echoing through my television screen. And my computer screen for the past hour.
3. Jennifer Lopez
J. Lo was tasked with a tribute to the Cuban “Queen of Salsa” and internationally renowned performer, Celia Cruz; and she knocked it out of the park with high octane performance that was nothing shy of perfection. The 44-year-old superstar managed to change her outfit onstage twice, rocking 3 killer outfits throughout the course of the 5 minute tribute. The stage was full of “dirty dancers” while J.Lo was getting spun, flipped and lifted around like a rag doll. The beautiful American Idol
judge was flawless!
2. Justin Timberlake
“We are JT and the Tennessee Kids and this is a song about alcohol,” said the former *NSYNC front-man, as he belted out a very country-esque tune with his acoustic guitar strapped across his back, and a slew of what we can imagine are “Tennessee kids” in the background. Presenter and comedian, Sarah Silverman, poked fun at JT after he won awards for both favorite pop/rock male artist and favorite soul/R&B artist… could favorite country male artist be next?!
1. Ariana Grande
Now I repeat…I was genuinely surprised that Ariana won best new artist ahead of Imagine Dragons, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Phillip Phillips and even Florida Georgia Line; but,
I will say that her debut AMA performance was stunning and stellar…and she definitely had the attention of everyone in attendance. The Nickelodeon star from Victorious
and Sam & Cat
belted out an acoustic rendition of her ballad “Tattooed Heart,” and got a standing ovation from the one and only, Lada Gaga. I’d say that counts as a stamp of serious approval.
And of course we can’t have an AMA performance piece without a little bit of Miley…so in case you missed the “Wrecking Ball” performance with her sidekick; a larger than life, lip-syncing pussycat, then check it out below.
Now it’s your turn to weigh in on the AMA’s; be sure to answer our poll questions and let your voice be heard!
