Pop Of Talent: R5 Is Ready To Take On The World

If the members of R5 haven’t got your full attention yet, just wait. They will.

With the release of their EP and single titled “Loud” back in February, the pop group is gearing up to make some noise this September with the release of their first full-length album. In an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Riker said of the EP, “We wanted to have a little bit of a teaser, we wanted [the songs] to be fun and upbeat. We wanted it to be loud.”

The group, which was formed back in 2009, consists of sibling rockers Riker, Rocky,Ross and Rydel Lynch, along with their friend Ellington Ratliff. The Lynch’s grew up in Littleton, Colorado, and attended a performing arts school where they initially learned to play music and dance. Like any musical family, the Lynch kids (along with younger brother, Ryland who is not a member of the band) would perform for family and friends (even as young as age four!), and the name “R5” was born.

“It’s a pop-rock family band. We’re all related except Ratliff (R5’s drummer) isn’t related by blood,” Riker explains. “All of our names start with the letter ‘R’ so that’s how we came up with the name. We get along really well,” he said of the group. “Rocky and I have been best friends for forever. We’re super, super close.”

In 2008, 16 year old Riker decided he wanted to move to L.A. to pursue a career in the entertainment world; his cousins Julianne and Derek Hough were already having great success in the industry, and he was ready to do the same. R5 has said that they meet up with their famous cousins at least once a month in LA to swap stories and catch up. Having the amazing parents that he did, Stormie and Mark Lynch decided to uproot the family and move everyone to California; the decision has clearly paid off because in 2012 the band was signed to Hollywood records! The family band has drawn comparison to other famous sibling entertainers like the Osmonds and the Jackson 5, and as big of a compliment as that is, R5 is clearly making a name for themselves all on their own.

When he wasn’t singing and playing bass in the family band, Riker could be seen singing and dancing with his sister Rydel, in the film Sunday School Musical, but is most well-known for his role as Dalton Academy Warbler, Jeff on Glee. Riker appeared has had a recurring role on the show since season 2 and has danced and sang with our favorite ex-Warblers Blaine and Kurt. “It’s been absolutely amazing. I’m in shock. I had no idea the Warblers would get so big. I thought it would last one, maybe two episodes at most,” said Lynch of his role on Glee.

“The whole cast is amazing. Ryan Murphy is a genius,” Lynch continued. “I’ve known Kevin McHale and Harry Shum Jr. for a while. I took hip-hop classes from Harry. I met Kevin at a dance studio. He was in NLT (McHale’s pre-’Glee’ band), and I was there listening.” Sounds like he met all the right people when he landed at LAX!

Riker’s younger brother Ross, who is the lead singer of R5, has also found fame on the small screen in Disney’s hit show Austin & Ally, where he has the starring role of Austin Moon. The 17 year old was also starred in Disney’s recent original movie, Teen Beach Movie. Ross will also be seen in the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted alongside fellow Disney star Debby Ryan as well as Tom Hiddleston, Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais. Exciting!

Rocky and Rydel play lead guitar and keyboard respectively, and both provide vocals to bring R5’s sound to life. Both siblings have had small roles in TV and movies, and we would love to see them follow in their brothers footsteps and hit the big time!

The final member of the band, Ellington Ratliff, met the Lynch’s through a dance studio in California before joining the group as their drummer. Ratliff has also had roles on television shows like Eastwick, Victorious and Raising Hope. He may not be a blood relative but he is definitely part of the R5 family.

The band recently announced the name and a teaser track for their new single, “Pass Me By.” The song “is about being really into a girl who sort of already has a guy in her life so you can’t tell how you feel. Then one day her guy leaves and you finally have your chance. You think to yourself, ‘Damn, you could be the one and I can’t let you pass me by.’ So you better go for it,”Riker shared. Brother Ross added about their upcoming tour, “We’re really looking forward to playing the new songs from the album live. In 2014 we really want to go on a world tour and play our music for everyone.” We really want you too!
