The last season of The Vampire Diaries is finally underway, and we can’t wait to see how the show wraps up! Is anyone else feeling nostalgic about all the characters that have come and gone over the years?
It goes without saying that fans miss Elena (Nina Dobrev). Personally, I’m indifferent to her and lean on the side of not really liking her, but I can’t deny that she’s an integral part to The Vampire Diaries. Elena’s technically not dead, so there’s a really good chance that we might see her one last time -- especially if show runner Julie Plec has her way.
Jeremy (Steven McQueen) is on the road hunting vampires. But with McQueen exiting Chicago Fire, is there a chance that Jeremy returns to The Vampire Diaries?
In case you forgot, The Other Side was a purgatory of sorts that allowed dead supernatural beings to travel back and forth between dimensions. It gave them a chance to head back to Mystic Falls to visit loved ones or stir up some trouble when the veil was lifted. Since that’s no longer an option, let’s take a look back at some characters we likely won’t see again unless it’s in flashbacks.
Lexi Branson (Arielle Kebbel)
Lexi is Stefan’s vampire BFF, and Damon killed her in the first episode she appeared. But one great thing about The Vampire Diaries is that, in a world filled with vampires, getting a visit from your vampire ghost BFF isn’t that out of the ordinary. Lexi always brought out a fun side in Stefan and was always able to bring him back when he switched off his humanity. When presented with the opportunity to leave The Other Side or go back to Mystic Falls, Lexi chose not to go back -- not because she didn’t want to but because she didn’t want to risk weakening Bonnie and lessening Damon’s chance of returning.
“Every person that passes through takes you one step closer to death. What kind of a best friend would I be if you died before Stefan got his brother back?” – Lexi Branson
Katherine Pierce/Katerina Petrova (Nina Dobrev)
The first Petrova Doppelganger we met -- and Elena’s nemesis -- Katherine described herself as “the cute one.” Katherine was the first woman to come between the Salvatore Brothers, and she fed both her blood, which resulted into them transitioning into vampires. Katherine was selfish, witty, a survivor and always stylish. After having been turned back into a human against her will, Silas drained Katherine of her blood, so he could have the cure. Miraculously, Katherine didn’t die right away and was unable to anchor herself in Elena’s body. After saying goodbye to the gang, Stefan stabbed her, and she died. Katherine was denied passage to the other side and dragged away into darkness. Seeing how Katherine was responsible for turning the Salvatore Brothers, we would love to see her one last time on The Vampire Diaries.
“I'm just trying to help. What would I know about post-traumatic stress? I only had my newborn ripped from my arms by my judgmental father. Then, I had to run 500 years after my entire family had been slaughtered by a psychopath, but hey! That didn't have any lingering side-effects.” - Katherine Pierce
Kai Parker (Chris Wood)
There was a reason that Kai’s family trapped him in a prison world. He slaughtered his family to siphon their power, and his imprisonment didn’t mellow him out at all. As soon as he made his escape, he was hellbent on killing the rest of his siblings and merging with his sister. As evil as Kai was -- and despite all the horrible things he did -- he was an enjoyable antagonist. Kai was pure evil, and he owned it -- except for that time he merged with his brother Luke, and he discovered he gained Luke’s empathy. Is there any chance of Kai returning to Mystic Falls to stir up a little evil before the season ends?
"Who names a kid Malachai? It’s like they expected me to be evil." - Kai
Grams/Sheila Bennett (Jasmine Guy)
Bonnie’s grandmother bailed out the Mystic Falls gang time and time again, both while living and dead. Elena’s life is metaphysically linked with Bonnie’s. Elena will wake up from her slumber when Bonnie dies. We know that Grams ultimately found peace, but, if there’s any chance of undoing the spell, Grams might be their best shot.
“I found peace because I made sure that you'll find yours.” - Grams
Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre)
On a show with very few parents, Liz was one of the few. In addition to being Caroline’s mother, Liz was the town sheriff. Liz knew about vampires, but, as other supernatural forces came to town, she was clueless. As she accepted Caroline as a vampire, she slowly learned about other supernatural forces and became an ally to the local vampires. While Damon initially manipulated her, the two grew to be close friends. Liz died of cancer -- but not before she shared a tearful goodbye with her daughter. Caroline was able to use her vampire powers to enter Liz’s mind and relive the memory of her mother teaching her how to ride a bike, which paralleled her letting go of her mom just like her mom had to let go of the bike. We’ve seen Liz in flashbacks, and it would be great to see her again.
“I have to admit there is a certain amount of peace knowing I'll be one of the only people in Mystic Falls to die an ordinary death. I'm exceptionally ordinary. I'm okay with that.” - Liz
Did we name your most missed characters? We're sure you noticed we skipped the Michaelsons -- only because they're on The Originals. Who do you want to see make a cameo appearance on The Vampire Diaries this season?
