With the announcement that Sir Eddie of Redmayne is set to play Newt Scamander in JK Rowling’s next movie trilogy in the Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the theme this week is, rather cleverly, called Creatures and Teachers. See what I did there? That’s as witty as this column will ever get. On with the art!

Harry Potter

Emmanuel Oquendo

If you studied Defense Against the Dark Arts, then you’ll already know what a Hinkypunk is. If you haven’t, or you’re a Muggle, then the books have this to say about them: “The Hinkypunk is a little one legged creature and looks as if it is made of smoke. It carries a lantern with which it lures travelers into bogs.” Emmanuel Oquendo’s beautiful piece certainly makes them look more than a little creepy…

TimShinn73’s Severus Snape sketchcard manages to entirely capture the divisive character of the Potions Master. Is he good, is he bad? Who knows. One thing we all know is that he has dreadful hair, and really should have gotten over Lily by now. I particularly love the simple colouring on this one. Fifty points to Slytherin.

Scribblerian’s Dumbledore work makes my heart sing. It’s a great illustration, showing the famous headmaster at his most kindly and weary. The beard, half moon spectacles and piercing blue eyes make him one imposing figure, however, despite his gentle look. Sherbet Lemons!

I always loved the Chamber of Secrets and the Basilisk scene in particular, so this comic book style illustration by Bas0411 had to be included! I really love Harry’s pose and the design of the beast itself.

And lastly, this one, which isn’t really a creature or a teacher…But I liked it too much not to stick it in the column! Quaffle Time by ap6y3 is a bold style and looks as though it’s come straight out of a comic book. Go Go Gryffindor!

And, as always, here’s one of mine... I’ve been experimenting with character design recently and wanted to explore the look of the House Elves, particularly Winky, who had a pivotal role in Goblet of Fire but sadly never made it to screen.

And your homework is to cover three sides of parchment explaining HOW EXCITED YOU ARE FOR FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM. Also check out the artists and follow Popwrapped on Twitter for arty updates!
