A biopic about Jorge Mario Bergoglio, more commonly referred to as Pope Francis, is set to be produced in Argentina.

The biopic will be directed by Alejandro Agresti (The Lake House) and will be called Historia De Un Cura (A Priest’s Tale). The film will cover many aspects of the Bergoglio’s life beginning with his childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina to the historic election to become the leader of the Catholic Church as the first Pope from Latin America as well as the first Jesuit Pope.

Starring in the film is Argentina native Rodrigo de la Serna, who has starred in several Spanish speaking films, including The Motorcycle Diaries.

Agresti told Variety that the biopic is an origins story. It will begin with Bergoglio’s trip to Rome to attend the conclave upon the announcement of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation. That said, the film will be told in a series of flashbacks, flash forwards and will focus a lot on Bergoglio as a person.

“More than a rapid biopic of key events, I’m more concerned with getting inside this very singular person, his decision to follow his vocation, and how he combined his faith and reason, having studied as a Jesuit for 14 years before being ordained,” Agresti tells Variety. Telling the story this way will help audiences further understand the impact that the Pope is making in Rome and around the world with his unconventional and revolutionary ways of doing things.

There has been no official release date for the film. Information, however, on the main languages of the film and locations to where the film will be shot have been determined. The main languages for the film are Spanish and Italian. It will be shot in Argentina, Italy and Germany, which is where Pope Francis attended school.
