Today would have been rock legend Kurt Cobain’s 47th birthday. He was best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the grunge band, Nirvana.
Kurt showed an interest in art and music at a young age. He excelled at drawing, so much that his talents were even showing in kindergarten. He also learned to play piano by ear and enjoyed a kiddie drum kit his parents had given him.
Cobain started his first band, Fecal Matter, early in 1985.They recorded a few songs together at his aunt’s house, but they never played any gigs.
Cobain formed Nirvana in 1985 and established it as a part of the Seattle music scene. While Nirvana’s ideology was indie rock and their melodies were pop, the sonic rush of their records and live shows merged post-industrial white noise with heavy metal grind.
On April 5, 1994, 27-year-old Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Even after his death he continued to intrigue and inspire fans. The band released Unplugged in New York shortly after Cobain’s death and it went to the top of the charts.
Kurt Cobain continues to inspire so many people, even after he’s been gone for 20 years.
Today Cobain’s home town, Aberdeen, Washington, had its First Annual Kurt Cobain Day. Perhaps it’s understandable that, in the two decades since his death, locals have felt unsure about the legacy of their city’s most famous son. But for the first time, Aberdeen will celebrate and pay respects to the rock legend.
Why not celebrate Cobain by listening to Nirvana’s hit song ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’
