Senior Staff Writer @KateMcHale42I recently got the opportunity to chat with Marie Miller, an incredibly talented singer with an entirely infectious personality. Marie is a folk-pop singer who has always wanted to be on stage. “I never thought about doing anything else,” Marie explained. “At the age of 12, I knew what I wanted to do.” Of course, it didn’t hurt that her parents were always so supportive. They never pushed her to do something she didn’t want to do; there was always a really cool middle ground: "My family always keeps me grounded. They don’t care that I’m a singer. Whatever I wanted to do they always supported.” Marie’s song “6’2” was recently featured on Dancing With The Stars during a Viennese Waltz performed by James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd. However, she didn’t even know for sure that the song would be featured until their performance started. Although, she said did tell me how exciting the whole experience was, “I got the phone call on Friday that my song (6’2) might be used on the Monday show in a Viennese Waltz. I didn’t know that they had used the song in the performance until the music came on.” Of course, that was an amazing experience, but being surrounded by her family and friends made it even better. “All of my family and friends were watching the show, and when my song started playing everyone was so excited," she said. Of course I had to ask her what made her write “6’2”, and she actually wrote it as a joke to her friends. “I wrote it when I was about 16 or 17, and all of my friends were talking about getting married and how they wanted their future husbands to look like. I then started playing the song at shows and people really seemed to like the song," she explained. While she can easily play the song in her sleep now, she loves the responses that she’s been getting on twitter: “People have been getting really creative on Twitter! I get tweets all the time about people’s heights!” While “6’2” is a lighthearted song, she wrote “You’re Not Alone” for one of her friends who was going through a really tough time and didn’t really know what to do. But Marie was able to pull from her own experiences to try and comfort him: “My sister was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 6 months old, now she’s healthy, but when they were in the hospital we got so much comfort from family and friends visiting us. Just the fact that they were there for us was so incredibly helpful. So I wanted to make a battle cry for him to let him know that he’s not alone.” As for what’s in the future for Marie, she’s excited to be doing more of her own shows and writing more songs, “I opened up for Sara Evans so it’s exciting to start doing some of my own shows. I’m going to be singing at the Baltimore Oriole’s game on Saturday (July 12th) so that’s pretty exciting as well!” Although, the band that she would love to tour with is NEEDTOBREATHE, so NEEDTOBREATHE what are ya’ll waiting for? Make this happen! I’m joking, but seriously this would be a great tour. While many different people have inspired her, none have done it more than Nickel Creek. More specifically, Chris Thile and his incredible mandolin skills. Thile is who inspired Marie to play the mandolin, which she still plays to this day. So many artists remember little details about when they first heard their song on the radio, maybe where they were or who they were with. However, Marie has managed to remember it all! When her first song, “Cold”, played on the radio, she was in Jacksonville, Florida with her dad. When “You’re Not Alone” played on the radio, she was in Nashville and she couldn’t help but turn the radio up and enjoy the moment. It’s always refreshing to meet someone who is not only ridiculously nice, but also so humble about her accomplishments. Marie Miller is a singer and songwriter who deserves all sorts of accolades and recognition. So if you aren’t listening to her music, what are you waiting for? Oh, and while you’re at it, go ahead and follow her on Twitter and like her on Facebook! Make sure to stay tuned to her new music, and go ahead and watch her video for “You’re Not Alone,” and take a listen to “6’2” if you haven’t already. http://youtu.be/D8EBt7pFAFw http://youtu.be/7UGrtwBgg0I Want to find out more about Marie?
