It’s common for presidential candidates to be asked an array of questions, usually about their views on issues that matter to the voting public who will or will not put them in office.

However, Democrat Bernie Sanders found himself at the receiving end of a rather unusual question earlier this week, concerning opponent Hillary Clinton’s hair and no, I’m not joking.

Ana Marie Cox of the New York Times Magazine asked:

“Do you think it’s fair that Hillary’s hair gets a lot more scrutiny than yours does?”

Now I honestly don’t think I could have asked that with a straight face and Sanders, unsurprisingly, wasn’t impressed either, responding:

“I don’t mean to be rude here. I am running for president of the United States on serious issues. O.K.? Do you have serious questions?”

Cox defended her question saying it related to the gender issues that exist in society, not just for election candidates, but Sanders was having none of it:

“When the media worries about what Hillary’s hair looks like or what my hair looks like, that’s a real problem…the media will very often spend more time worrying about hair than the fact we’re the only major country on earth that doesn’t guarantee health care to all people.”

He did however admit that the media and their habit of paying more attention to what female candidates look like than men was:

“absolutely wrong.”
