The official family photos from Prince George’s christening have been unveiled by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, marking the baby prince’s first public appearance since his birth in July. The christening took place this past Wednesday (October 23) in the Chapel Royal at St. James’ Palace, and was attended by members of the royal family, the Middletons, as well as Prince George’s godparents and their spouses. Early Wednesday morning Kensington Palace released the names of the Prince of Cambridge’s godparents, chosen by his parents Prince William and Duchess Kate. They include Will’s royal cousin Zara Tindall, William van Cutsem his close childhood friend and Julia Samuel, a dear friend of his late mother Diana, as well as Emilia Jardine-Paterson who introduced Will and Kate, the couple’s university friend Oliver Baker, the young royals’ previous private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, and Hugh, Earl Grosvenor, the son of the Duke of Westminister. These choices represent a break with tradition, as they include non-royal friends, rather than the expected royals, which would have featured George’s grandfather Prince Charles, for example.

The released photos, taken by Jason Bell, feature three-month-old George surrounded by his family in Clarence House, wearing a detailed replica of the lace and satin christening gown Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter wore in 1841.

The selection also includes one historic photo of the Queen with three future kings, Princes Charles, William and George, the first of its kind in over 120 years. Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, discussed her son’s christening at an Action on Addiction charity event, joking, “He was such a good boy actually, we’re very lucky – he’s not always like that.”
