Fans of the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother might have something to look forward to after the series wraps its 9th and final season next year. Show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will be teaming up with Up All Night creator and executive producer Emily Spivey to work on a spin-off of the series expected to be called How I Met Your Father.
If this newly proposed project is given the green light, HIMYF will follow around a group of friends living in New York City, and one woman’s attempt to find her future husband. While characters in the spin-off won’t be tied in any way to the characters of HIMYM, the characters for the new show are rumored to be introduced in the series finale. (Sorry, guys. I really wanted to see the journey “the Mother” took to meet Ted, too. Sometimes life isn’t fair.) While Ted and friends probably won’t be seen in HIMYF, their weekly hangout, MacKlaren’s Pub, could be featured.
Thomas hinted to Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that a spinoff could happen: “There’s a world where the universe of the show can continue to exist in a way that feels coherent to what’s come before, but new enough to be worth watching.”
If HIMYF comes to be, CBS could see some huge ratings. HIMYM is one of the network’s strongest comedies, second only to The Big Bang Theory.
How I Met Your Mother airs Monday nights at 8pm on CBS.
