Usually a dog born without eyes in the grim and violent environment of a puppy mill wouldn’t have much hope for survival, let alone happiness. The dog now known as “Smiley,” however, has beaten the odds.
The spunky Golden Retriever is now getting tons of love and affection and giving even more back in his job as a therapy dog
in Stouffville, Canada.
Smiley was lucky enough to be rescued from the mill in his first years and raised with love by Joanne George, who also owns a deaf Great Dane named Tyler. Though shy and frightened at first, Smiley soon came out of his shell and became a smart, sociable and affectionate companion for Joanne and Tyler.
Despite his blindness, Smiley also showed an amazing ability to interact positively with crowds. That skill coupled with Smiley’s naturally playful and perceptive demeanor signaled to Joanne that Smiley had the makings of a perfect therapy dog.
It didn’t take long for Smiley to start spreading joy and happiness throughout the city’s hospitals, schools and other institutions. Joanne noted one event at a nursing home which stood out in particular for her.
“There was this man Teddy, with no speech, no communication at all,” Joanne recalled. “They had never seen Teddy smile before, but he smiled when Smiley got into his vision.”
So for anyone out there feeling damaged, lost, or worthless, take a cue from Smiley. Everyone has something to give, so just get out in the world and spread all the love you can!
