Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, paid a visit to the set of Game of Thrones.  This is part of her tour of her Northern Irish realm, where part of the hit fantasy series is filmed.

She was brought to the throne room of Westeros where she met some of the stars of the show. Actors Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Conleth Hill (Lord Varys), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) were lined up besides the famous Iron Throne. The Queen approached the literal seat of power of the seven kingdoms, which characters of the fantasy television series have fought and died over.

Fans of Game of Thrones watched the live broadcast with bated breath, curious as to whether a real monarch would take a seat on the fictional throne, but were left disappointed when the Queen chose not to do so. Knowing full well what happened to the last three occupants of the Iron Throne, who could blame her? Besides, seven kingdoms seems like such a small number compared to the sixteen realms she reigns over. Still, it would have made a great meme.
