Don’t expect any hot air balloons or flying monkeys! The creators of Once Upon a Time are hard at work after their midseason finale from this past Sunday! Forget Elphaba or Theodora, because this Wicked Witch of the West is getting her own name and a new storyline to go with it!
Lost’s Rebecca Mader stars in this iconic role, leading us into the Land of Oz with all the flair and misunderstood villainy of the original WWOTW. What did we really know of the Wicked Witch anyway?
In the original film, adapted from the children’s series, the Witch is after the ruby red slippers that transferred to Dorothy’s feet after a house landed on the Good Witch of the East—the Wicked Witch’s sister. The entire movie is her desire to possess these shoes—and she’ll do anything to get them!
Then there’s Wicked, the acclaimed musical based on the book by Gregory Maguire of the same name. All Elphaba wants to do is fit in with the people around her. But, as with every adaptation of the character, she’s green. Her own father will only let her attend school if she takes care of her sister, Nessarose.
All of these adaptations have one thing in common: the Witch is feared because of her ability to do magic.
Flash-forward to Once Upon a Time’s trip into Oz, with Mader leading the charge! The official tag for the second half of the season is “Wicked is Coming.” Mader tweeted this line along with a photo of her full costume and makeup!

Will the Wicked Witch get her own redemption story? Will Emma believe Hook, leaving her new life behind to rescue a family she doesn’t remember? March can’t come soon enough!
