The front page of the Internet (as Reddit is often called) is a powerful force used for neither good nor evil. You need to police yourself and each other because Reddit officials won’t get involved. Think of it as a “do unto others” policy.

For the first time in recent memory, Reddit CEO Yishan Wong struck the ban hammer down on an entire Reddit sub-community entitled “The Fappening” dealing with the celebrity nude photo leak, because the subreddit quickly became the files’ bridge to a more mainstream audience.

While the content is not something too different from other subreddits, the reason for the ban hammer was the fact that “The Fappening” became the epicenter for related Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown requests because of the photos, and users continuing to post them.

Wong took to the official Reddit blog and explained his stance:

In accordance with our legal obligations, we expeditiously removed content hosted on our servers as soon as we received DMCA requests from the lawful owners of that content, and in cases where the images were not hosted on our servers, we promptly directed them to the hosts of those services. While current U.S. law does not prohibit linking to stolen materials, we deplore the theft of these images and we do not condone their widespread distribution.

Translated, this means that Reddit’s official stance is not due to the fact that it’s a nude photo leak (because they don’t care about nude photos), but that the pictures are stolen copyright material of which DMCA validly requests removal.

Wong updated the post to add: “This blog post is not an explanation for why /r/TheFappening was banned. It is an explanation for why we will not ban questionable subreddits, of which /r/TheFappening is one of them.”

So for those looking for more fap material, there’s plenty on Reddit – just make sure it isn’t copyrighted!

I won’t mention the privacy issues or the fact that the photos were leaked without permission or any of the other messy details. Reddit is firmly a police-yourself system. Just think about that the next time you send someone nudes. You’re probably on a subreddit somewhere.
