Director Roland Emmerich has adressed the backlash caused by the trailer of his upcoming film, Stonewall.
The movie is based on the pivotal 1969 riots of the same name, where members of the LGBT community protested against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn. It is considered the single most important event in the gay liberation movement in the United States.
The LGBT community has lambasted the trailer for showing the riots as being led by, or at least started by, a white cis male, played by Jeremy Irvine. They have accused the movie of whitewashing and not giving due credit to transgender colored individuals who led the true to life riots; this has resulted in a call for a boycott of the film.
On Thursday, Emmerich posted a response to the backlash on his Facebook page, writing:
