It looks like Ronald McDonald is ready for his social media close up. The clown recently got an update, and is now vowing to have more of a presence on social media. While McDonald’s isn’t going to give Ronald his own social media accounts, they are simply going to let Ronald upload selfies from time to time.
The clown has a very iconic baggy yellow jumpsuit, his painted on face, red afro, and his floppy red shoes. Now, the company has decided to upgrade his wardrobe but insists the red shoes will stay his choice of footwear. The Ronald McDonald upgrade is being done in order to not only boost sales, but to discourage slowness and order inaccuracies. There is also going to be more of an emphasis on their titular menu items, such as The Big Mac and their famous French fries.
Corporate Accountability International has been pressing McDonald’s to retire Ronald in recent years. They feel like McDonald’s is using him to market its food to children. McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson stands by their decision to use the iconic clown; “Ronald is not a bad guy — he’s about fun, he’s a clown. So I’d ask all you to let your kids have fun too.”
Ronald is going to use the hashtag #ronaldmcdonald. He made his debut to social media Wednesday with a picture and this caption, “Selfies … here I come! It’s a big world and now, wherever I go and whatever I do … I’m ready to show how fun can make great things happen.”
What do you think of McDonald’s revamped Ronald? Should they have kept him the same, or was the change much needed?
