Variety has confirmed that the History channel will be rebooting the 1977 miniseries Roots. They plan to make a new eight-hour miniseries after gaining rights from Mark Wolper, son of the executive producer, David L. Wolper, along with the rights to the novel, Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

The project is said to draw material from both the book and the miniseries, while also offering a contemporary perspective. “We would like to revive that cultural icon for a new audience,” said History Executive Vice President and General Manager, Dirk Hoogstra.

Debuting in January 1977, Roots is still one of the biggest cultural phenomena on ABC. It drew over 100 million viewers and its finale still ranks as the third highest-rated TV broadcast, per Nielson ratings.

Roots is based on Alex Haley’s family history. It’s a story of slavery, life in the American South and some of the key moments in US history as seen through the eyes of the family. These notable events include the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slave uprisings and their eventual emancipation.

We can see why the Roots remake was put into full gear after only a couple of meetings and is making its way back to television.
