Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race are in for a sickening season, if the premiere party thrown this past Monday night at Stage 48 in New York City is any indication.
In what has become a yearly tradition, Brandon Voss and his team at Voss Events hosted an over the top premiere event that’s sure to leave any fan gagging. This year did not disappoint.
Hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race season 6 winner Bianca Del Rio, each queen performed a number representative of their vastly different styles. While season 7 came under scrutiny from fans, it would seem from the premiere event that the show has fully rebounded back into its full glory and is going to deliver what fans want in spades this coming season.
All 12 queens took to the red carpet in a frenzy of fashion, rhinestones, and big hair. Some of the tensions between cast members were palpable, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out on screen.
Britney impersonator Derrick Barry was stunning in a gorgeous red gown and revealed that he is working on a debut single with Billboard chart topping producer Chris Cox.
Bob the Drag Queen brought the house down with a rainbow colored dress reveal on stage and was definitely a huge fan favorite during his performance.
Laila McQueen slayed the crowd with a Beetleguice/Britney/Marilyn Manson medley, complete with wig reveal as well.
Naomi Smalls radiated beauty and said that her entrance look was inspired by “Naomi Campbell by a swimming pool.”
Dax ExclamationPoint wore the mantle of “Queen of the Nerds” well, donning a silver outfit that evoked Storm herself of X-Men fame and also teased a foray into music.
Cynthia Lee Fontaine’s energy captivated the room, and she announced that she has a new YouTube show coming out soon.
Robbie Turner, a fan – and cast – favorite, evoked Vicki Lawrence from Mama’s Family, in a hysterical dance to “I Will Survive.”
Kim Chi was also a huge fan favorite and got much fanfare as she admitted she only auditioned one time for the show; however, fans were living for her performance.
Acid Betty was visually a work of art, and used her “hypercolor” in shades of pink and red and performed a rousing live number rather than lipsynch.
Thorgy Thor had the most talked about look of evening, dressed in a fat suit, but said that she did it to bring forward the point that drag represents all body sizes and shapes, and was grateful for the experience to be part of the family.
Chi Chi DeVayne performed a phenomenal lipsynch to Mariah Carey and stunned on the red carpet in a gold gown.
Naysha Lopez made the declaration that all of her is “sickening”, and the fans all seem to agree, based on her performance of “How Deep is Your Love.“
Fans at the event were also treated to a live preview of the first episode which got raucous laughter and cheers from the audience.
