Episode 12 of RWBY RECP, "Jaundice"!
The high-strung and eccentric motor mouth Professor Oobleck is giving a lecture, zooming this way and that, drinking out of his coffee cup and providing exposition regarding the Faunus war and the discrimination Faunuses (Faunii? Give me a concrete answer, Rooster Teeth!) face at the hands of humans. Given that Faunii are an allegory to people of colour/differing sexual orientations, they are comparable to the subtext of mutants in X-Men being stand-ins for victims of racism, prejudice, homophobia, etc.
Professor Oobleck asks for an answer to a question and Weiss provides the perfect answer. Oobleck asks a follow-up question and Jaune, who is lightly dozing at the front of the class, inadvertently raises his hand and says "Hey" when Cardin hits him in the head with a paper football from behind. Oobleck latches onto this, asking Jaune what the answer to the question is, and Pyrrha tries to help him from behind Oobleck's point of vision (despite being shown off to the side and behind his position in the classroom), and Jaune fucks it up.
My poor sweet blond son. He does that a lot.
He answers night vision, and Pyrrha facepalms. When Cardin is unable to answer the question without being snide (he didn't know the answer either), Pyrrha calls him out on his prejudice before providing the answer. It's night vision. Many faunus are known to have nearly perfect sight in the dark. Blake expounds upon the answer and outlines why the foolish general failed at his endeavour -- he tried a sneak attack at night while the faunus were sleeping. She takes a potshot at Carding, likening him to the foolish general.
Oobleck requests Jaune and Cardin stay after class for an extra readings. After class, Oobleck mentions how both of them are struggling and how whatever their issues are (lack of interest or stubborn natures), it ends then. He reminds them that Beacon Academy only accepts the best of the best and that they both worked hard to get there, so they should act accordingly.
As they leave, Cardin pushes Jaune out of the way, and Pyrrha glares at him menacingly. She says, "You know, I really will break his legs." Jaune sighs, and then Pyrrha has a moment where she gets an idea and drags Jaune to the roof.
She offers to train him, and Jaune is hurt, because he thinks Pyrrha thinks he's bad at fighting. Pyrrha tries to recover, saying everyone needs a little help, but Jaune is upset and hurt so lashes out and reveals that he doesn't belong at this school. When Pyrrha tries to assure him he does, Jaune snaps and reveals that he forged his transcripts and bluffed his way into Beacon. Pyrrha is shocked, but she doesn't judge him or turn away, simply asking why.
Jaune reveals it's because he knows he's not good enough, but his father was, and his father's father, and his father before him. His weapons belonged to his male relatives and he wanted to be a hero like them. So he got his hands on some fake transcripts and lied.
Pyrrha insists on helping him then, teaching him and training him on how to be a better fighter, but Jaune's wounded macho man ego rejects it and tells her how he doesn't want her help and he doesn't want to be the damsel in distress, and how he wants to be a hero. He's tired of being the lovable idiot who can't do anything, stuck up in a tree while his friends fight for their lives. He thinks he if can't do it on his own, then what good is he?
Pyrrha reaches out to comfort him with a touch but Jaune pulls away, and asks her to leave him alone. She obliges, upset, replying, "If that's what you think is best."
Cardin crawls up from the window below the roof, where his room was. He reveals he overheard the whole thing, and is amused that Jaune managed to bluff his way into Beacon.
Jaune begs him not to tell, and Cardin puts Jaune in a headlock, asking why he would snitch on his new friend? He then promptly orders Jaune to do the extra readings/assignments for him.
Looks like Jaune and Cardin are going to be spending quite a bit of time together. It's a pity. I despise Cardin.
All the Arkos feels, eh?

Ain’t that grand? I’m a huge fan of Rooster Teeth, even if I’m relatively new. I got into it for RWBY earlier this year (sadly, after the great and true soul of Monty Oum, creator of RWBY and crew member of Red vs Blue for a few seasons and beloved Rooster Teeth employee), and then retroactively watched all of Red vs Blue and wish I grew up with it (because 10+ years of Texas? Yes please. My fave. Please give me more Texas (I never thought I’d say that in any context).), and then watched X-Ray and Vav recently.
Rooster Teeth is truly amazing, perhaps my favourite company in the world (barring PopWrapped, of course), and I think they deserve all the support and fans in the world. Make sure to buy the first two Volumes of RWBY at the Rooster Teeth store.
Anyways, now that I’m done gushing over RT (at least for this article), what did you think of “Jaundice Part 2?” And more importantly, this deliciously idiosyncratic RECP?
Tune in next time for another episode of RWBY RECP!
