Cue the USA chants! The United States has taken home their first gold medal of the 2014 Sochi Olympics!
Sage Kotsenburg, 20-year-old snowboarder for Team USA, celebrated his first place win in men’s snowboard slopestyle with a score of 93.5 by tweeting, “WOW!! I just won the Olympics!! Bringing back the first Gold here to the USA! Love seeing all the support from everyone YOU RULE!!”
According to NY Daily News, Kotsenburg says, “It feels awesome. I don’t know what to call it. I have no idea what’s actually going on. This is the craziest thing that ever happened.”
Fellow American snowboarder, Shaun White, arguably the most well-known athlete of the sport, withdrew from the snowboard slopestyle event “to focus on the men’s halfpipe next week.” The event has been popular at the Winter X Games, involving tricks with aerials, flips, and other crazy maneuvers. The Olympic Committee expects this, as well as other snowboarding events, to bring in a younger audience.
