Officials from Sam’s Club have issued an apology following an incident in their Secaucus, NJ store. A customer complained to the chain after seeing a swastika bracelet on a cashier’s wrist.

The shopper, Paul Fried, who was interviewed by News12 in New Jersey, said that he is the son of a Holocaust survivor, but he does not want the cashier to be fired. Instead, he hoped that this situation would help people be more aware of the feelings of others.

According to the report, when Fried asked the cashier about her bracelet, she said it was not a swastika that represented Nazi Germany and, instead, had a different meaning.

In the statement from Sam’s Club, the company apologized and explained that the clerk “had no intention to offend anyone. The symbol has more than one meaning … Even so, she has volunteered to no longer wear the bracelet while working.”

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website defines the swastika as follows:

It had numerous meanings, the most common being a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness. However, the work of (noted archeologist Heinrich) Schliemann soon was taken up by völkischmovements, for whom the swastika was a symbol of “Aryan identity” and German nationalist pride.
